What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living is part of the NDIS, where the NDIS pays for all the support you need to live independently.

In essence, it covers the cost of having a carer on site, in your home to help you with things like making meals, personal care, medical assistance and a range of other important needs.

You can live on your own, or in a shared home with flatmates who have similar needs, and we can help arrange all of this for you too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does NDIS Supported Independent Living cost?

If you are eligible, Supported Independent Living is funded by your NDIS plan. To receive this type of funding, it needs to be determined as reasonable and necessary for everyday living. Once you receive this funding, some additional provider costs are built into the hourly rate a provider charges you for providing SIL services. This includes their costs for management and staff training.

The NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits outlines the maximum hourly price limits that you or your provider can claim for Supported Independent Living.

What does Supported Independent Living include?

  • Help with personal care activities
  • Help building skills for everyday life
  • Help with behaviour support plans

  • Support with supervision and security
  • Support with medication and appointments

What is the difference between Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

Specialist Disability Accommodation is housing for people with extreme functional impairment or high support needs. Supported Independent Living is the on-site support provided. The NDIS funds them separately to give you more choice.

Who does NDIS Support Independent Living suit?

People with higher support needs — requiring care 24/7 or substantial help daily. SIL is available whether you live alone or in shared accommodation.

How do you get Supported Independent Living included in your NDIS plan?

You must share details with the NDIA about your goals, current supports, housing preferences, and may need assessments from health professionals.

What happens once I am approved for SIL in my NDIS plan?

You’ll receive funding and can choose your provider. Then you’ll form a service agreement detailing how and what support will be provided.

Can I access Supported Independent funding while living alone?

Yes, you can receive SIL even if you live in your own home, rental, or other housing arrangements.

What levels of Supported Independent Living are available?

Lower need: not usually 24/7. Standard need: 24/7 assistance. Complex need: high-level ongoing care including behaviours and medical needs.

Who can help me manage my Supported Independent Living funding and services?

Support Coordinators funded by NDIS can help plan, implement, and connect you with services and providers suited to your needs.

What happens if I need to change my support needs?

If your situation changes, you can request a plan review with NDIA. They will reassess your support needs based on new evidence or reports.
